What started as an ambitious fan art school project many years ago has finally come to fruition. Everything in the scene except the lake material and a few effects have been created by us, heavily inspired by the cartoon series Adventure Time featuring Finn and Jake's adventures in the land of Ooo. The treehouse is a center piece in the series, being the living space for our heroes as well as a gathering point for friends and foe.
Our ultimate goal was to capture the essence of the treehouse, bringing in as many details as possible while utilizing the rendering power of Unreal Engine 5. The scene is brought to life with a stylized approach, taking inspiration from stop motion and miniature dioramas. We combined the designs from the show with our own style using exaggerated shapes and colors, as well as heavily art directed lighting and camera effects to achieve our own interpretation.
The entire scene is crafted like a video game environment. Everything is connected, all rooms are scaled accordingly and follows the series as close as possible. This project has been an immense undertaking, from developing our own take on the style to planning and execution. The project contains almost 300 handcrafted meshes, some are created using sculpting and baking while others utilize trim sheets and tiling textures for optimization and efficiency. Additionally the scene contains over 100 material instances crafted in Zbrush and Substance Designer.
I'm immensely proud of our achievement, working with my friend has been a big learning in collaboration and large scale environment creation. This is truly a labor of love. We're happy to share our version of the Adventure Time treehouse, and who knows, maybe we get to turn it into a video game one day.
